Close your eyes for the one last time …
Not my picture, obviously, I just added color and text because I found myself staring endlessly at the two-page spread of Itachi’s death. I’m not particularly attached to the character, but I felt like honoring his passing, and the bond he has with his brother. I was also impressed with the parallels between Sasuke risking everything to go after Itachi, and Naruto risking everything to go after Sasuke. Very different intentions; very similar results. While everyone else gets on with their lives, they can’t.
Itachi’s always been the manipulator, the one that knows what’s “really” going on. But I think at some level, he got lost in his own machinations. Beyond the seemingly important differences between loving and hating, saving or killing, he seems relieved that Sasuke came. Even if he can’t tell him anything, and can’t let Sasuke know that he loved him … what his little brother thinks of him somehow pales compared to the fact that he still thinks of him at all.
Sasuke moved heaven and earth to get Itachi, and in a strange, twisted way, Itachi seems comforted by that. Granted, his plans came to fruition: Sasuke is alive and strong enough to remain so. But there’s more. Although Itachi fully intended to take his secrets to the grave, I think knowing that his brother still cared enough to personally track him down and kill him made it all worthwhile. Twisted? Yeah. But also kind of touching.
